Cool rainy day. In spite of rain there are many singing birds. I can't discern the voices of birds so good therefore it is difficult to me to say correctly what birds I heard today. But it is not so easy to find birds on the rainy day. Almost all birds hide in the thick branches. I can say correctly that I saw Common and Lesser Whitethroats. But even these birds were instant showed. Always female Stonechat is noticeable. It did not hide into the bushes but in spite of rain sat on the twigs of roses.

So there are a little of birds. And to photograph birds on the rainy day is not so easy. Drops of water and mostly cloudy weather hinder to photograph. In murky weather it is possible to make photos only of low-mobility birds. For example Nightjars. Today I found five Nightjars. Two light sandy color birds and three some darker ones. In course. The first Nightjar sat in the grass under the bush. It was very dark color. Bird allowed to photograph it from two sides. When bird flew off white spots on the wings were very well noticeable. The second one sat under the rain on the hummock among the flower bed. It was also very dark. It allowed to close to it and did not fly away. The third bird was light-sandy, it sat on the pine tree. Twice it flew over but finally didn't change location. There were not white spots on the wings in flight. In flight it appeared even-sandy color. Two last birds did not take off, the fourth bird sat on the willow and the fifth one on the larch. The fifth Nightjar also was sandy color. Nothing it changed in the time of my weekly absence in Kazakhstan. Even birds which are on the migration path in Almaty yet did not fly away.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
