2007-06-02| Askar Isabekov

Today went to see Dalmatian Pelicans to Sorbulak reservoir with Raufael Bairashev. On the road saw several Lesser Grey Shrikes, one Long-tailed Shrike, one Black-headed Wagtail, one Citrine Wagtail with three large juveniles, Rollers, Bee-eaters, Hoopoes.

Sorbulak. Waterlogged shore. Cheeping Black-winged Stilts were a much number. Also many Lapwings, indefinite little wader flying out whet I try to close them. Near the marsh saw flock of Common Starlings but on the rock flocks of Rosy Pastors. Clamorous Reed Warbler active sang on the bulrush thickets. Several Grey Herons and one White Egret flew. Also saw common Great Crested Grebes and Coots. A lot of Great Cormorants.

A lot of Ruddy Shelducks. Several flocks about 250 birds in all. Ruddy Shelducks were not so scary. When we closed them birds slowly floated to the center of reservoir. On the crowd of large Shelducks other ducks were not noticeable. Probable saw pair of Garganeys. Spied to binocular several Eurasian Wigeons, Northern Shovelers, flock of Red-crested Pochards, pair of Mallard Ducks. A little of gulls. Saw several Caspian and Black-headed Gulls, Common Terns and one Little Tern.

The object of today trip are Dalmatian Pelicans. Dalmatian Pelicans began nest on Sorbulak on 90th. Today saw about 30 birds. Pelicans rest near the shore by the groups of 2-7 birds each. Very easy birds. On man's closing Pelicans sailed about 50 meters from shore and easy waited when the danger go out. Once the group of 8 birds began to hover. Birds hovered a long, climbed and flew out.

Further went to Kurty. Near the village and on river's rocks a lot of Black Kites. Some birds rest but other ones hovered. On the river Barn Swallows gathered the mud.

Returning saw several Red-headed Buntings and one singing Grey-headed Goldfinch.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.
