Ile region. Almaty oblast.

2007-07-08| Askar Isabekov

The weather is murky and windy. There are many little lakes in Ile region. There are always some birds on these lakes. Today I could to visit two lakes. On first lake met adult Great Crested Grebes with juvenile birds. Also saw a lot of Rollers' burrows. But Rollers are scary birds. Try to make photos of Rollers near the burrows unsuccessful ended. I waited birds near the nest but didn't wait. Birds flew to burrows but having seen me crying changed course of fly and departed back. Strong wind casted out birds from russian olives and salttrees. Saw only several Tree Sparrows. Once saw flying Little Bittern. A lot of Rooks (mostly juveniles) and several Jackdaws clustered near the pools and drank the water.

On roadside elm thickets met only one Shikra and several flocks of Turkestan Tits. Mynahs and Rosy Pastors were in evidence.

On second lake number of birds were some more. Clamorous Reed Warblers were audible. Again saw Crested Grebes, Coots with juveniles. From time to time Little Bitterns flew above reeds. Once flew Night Heron. Heard sound of ducks, twice scared Mallard Ducks. Highly flew pair of Grey Herons and several Black-headed Gulls. There are Great Cormorants on the lake also.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
