Talghar, Ile regions. Almaty oblast.

2008-01-12| Askar Isabekov

Harvest of berries and probably cones in the mountains is failure. Probably therefore birds are a little in the mountain. Today I decided to go to Ile valley to see birds on the roadside Russian olive thickets. On the valley as usually more cold than in the city. There was little frozen smoke on the air. Some problems to photograph.

Tonkeris. Talghar region. Many raptors. Less than one hour we saw 5-6 Upland Buzzards, one White-tailed Sea-Eagle and one Barbary Falcon. Barbary Falcon is probably most interesting bird today. On roadside Grey-headed Goldfinches, Great Tits, Azure Tits occurred. As last years on Russian olive thickets Greenfinches, Blackbirds and Black-throated Thrushes were common. Birds were many but lesser than last year. For a moment saw one Redstart, probably Guldenstadt's Redstart. Yet we saw flock of Black-headed Goldfinches rare in our places. Unfortunately passing car scared birds and we couldn't watched them.

Jetigen. Ile region. On the old Kapchagai road birds were a little. On roadside thickets from time to time the flocks of little birds occurred. It were Grey-headed Goldfinches and Tree Sparrows. Once saw the pair of grey birds looks like Eversmann's Redstart. But birds quickly flew out and we didn't have possibility to identify it. On the villages Crested Larks often occurred. Larks picked seeds on roadside. Once saw mixed flock of Yellowhammers and Chaffinches.

Kapchgai. The lake is full frozen. In the bulrushes we saw one male Pheasant.

1. Eastern Buzzard (Buteo japonicus)

2. Azure Tit (Parus cyanus tianschanicus)

3. Barbary Falcon (Falco pelegrinoides babilonicus)

4. Black-throated Thrush (Turdus atrogularis)

5. Crested Lark (Galerida cristata iwanowi)

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
