Tajikistan. Iskanderkul.

2008-09-07| Askar Isabekov

Iskanderkul lake. Panjchashma. On early morning on Iskanderkul I saw one Hobby and Carrion Crows. Near the lake round road the flocks of Chukar Partridges flew to watering. On the rocks the Chukars calls were heard all time, sometimes they flew with roars from rock to another. The sound of flying Partridges was so vociferous as roar of airplane. In the juniper forest Hume's Warblers and Black-breasted Tits fed and in the bushes on the rocks Great Whitethroats and Lesser Whitethroats fed. In the Panjchashma place there were quite a few birds, mostly common Lesser Whitethroats, Spotted Flycatchers, Long-tailed Shrikes, Blyth's Reed Warblers and Hume's Warblers. But also there were uncommon Black Redstart, Common Rosefinch, Stonechat, Bar-tailed Treecreeper, Blackbirds. Some Lesser Whitethroats look larger than other ones, probably they are Hume's Whitethroat (Sylvia althaea). Over the rocks flocks of loudly Red-billed Choughes flew by. On the rocks Magpies and Carrion Crows sat. Also on the rocks Wallcreeper and Blyth's Reed Warbler fed. One Black Kite flew by, but over the rocks Sparrowhawk soared. But on the lake nearby coast one Mallard floated.

On dinner time on the coast poplar forest except common Hume's Warblers and Lesser Whitethroats I saw two Olive-backed Pipits and Bar-tailed Treecreepars. On the coast Masked and Grey Wagtails fed.

Snake Lake. On the lake four pairs of Mallards floated. Now color of both males and females of Mallards look same, but heads of some males begin to dark. On the reeds there were a lot of Eurasian Reed Warblers, but over the reed female Marsh Harrier soared. Sometimes Hobby accompanied (attacked) Harrier. Ducks by day fed on the Iskanderkul lake but slept on the Sanke lake. But I didn't wait ducks. On the rocks and on the bushes there were a lot of Lesser Whitethroats, two Rock Nuthatches loudly called one to another. Wood Pigeon flew by. On the back way I saw Long-tailed Shrikes and flock of Spanish Sparrows on the currant bushes. But on the pool Blue Whistling Thrush and Oriental Turtle Doves fed.

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.
