Degeres. Almaty oblast.

2009-07-18| Askar Isabekov

After more the one month period without special birding trips I with Raufael Bairashev made the birding tour to Degeres. In the colony of Rosy Starlings there was the noise which I didn't wait. I thought that Rosy Starlings already started the autumn wanderings. But we saw that many juvenile birds couldn't make it. The large part of juveniles still needs the parental support. These short-tailed young birds hid between large rocks, in the bushes and from time to time were shown and asked the food. The parents of these young birds flew all around in the searching of the food. The juveniles which could self forging flew together with adult birds. The second popular today's bird was Lesser Grey Shrike. Shrikes fed juveniles too.

The Demoiselle Cranes flew to the lake. There were two Grey Herons on the lake too. The interesting observation: the Black Stork flew out to the west. It was my second observation of the Black Stork in Degeres. Probably Storks nest in the local rocks. Also I saw three nests of the Rock Nuthatches (two old and one new). The decoration of the nest were old, probably the nests already aren't used. I didn't watch Nuthatches but saw pair of Ravens. The narrow gorge with the little river. In addition to numerous Rosy Starlings and Lesser Grey Shrikes we watched one Kingfisher, Oriole, Cuckoo, Common Sandpiper, Red-headed Buntings, Grey-headed Goldfinches, juvenile Wagtails, Spanish Sparrows. Several times we noted Chukars, once the female with a little nestling.

Raptors. In different places we saw many Hobbies. In one place we saw the nest with white chick. Once we found the Kestrel's nest with the large juvenile birds. The parents of these chicks flew about the nest. The large raptors we saw today were two Long-legged Buzzards and one Cinereous Vulture.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
