Topar, Bura, Bakanas.

2010-05-22| Askar Isabekov

Day was overcast, rainy. During the day the rain was three times. On the numerous little lakes around Topar I noticed the same ducks I saw yesterday, but most popular of ducks were Ferruginous Ducks from the Red Data Book, also I saw female Red-crested Pochards with juveniles and once the male Garganey. Other birds were two Great White Egrets, Moorhens, Coots, one Little Bittern. In Topar village there were roaring Black Kites, also there were many Pale Sand Martins and Barn Swallows.

Riparian forests of Ile river. Red-headed Buntings, Shikra in nest, Long-legged Buzzards, three times I saw males of Montagu's Harriers. On the bushes in addition to common Red-headed Bunting I noticed also wet Eurasian Bee-eaters, and on wires wet Rollers too. The birds flew a bit but sang actively.

Bura, Bakanas. In Bura I a bit walked in saxaul forest. It was interesting to watch how Crested Larks and Isabelline Wheatears tried to get my attention probably because of the nests or nestlings were close. I wanted to search the nests but didn't find them because I didn't have same experience. The pale Long-legged Buzzard was very beauty looked on today's dark murky sky background. Also it was interesting to see Rufous Bush Robin sitting on the wires. Near Bakanas on roadside little lakes I saw the Ferruginous Ducks again, but on wires the European Turtle Dove.

Malay-Sary. Little Owl perched on direction sight. I tried to shoot it but didn't catch; Owl was cast out by Roller.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
