Along the Syrdarya river.

2010-06-29| Askar Isabekov

In the morning near Baigekum village I attempted to find Saxaul Sparrows or/and White-winged Woodpeckers but didn't see both. Some times I walked in the thickets between Jolek and Syrdaria river coast. I watched Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters, one careful Menetries Warbler, Pied Bushchat and Turkestan Tits, in addition to rarities I also saw Eurasian Bee-eaters, Collared Doves (in Baigekum and Jolek), Red-headed Buntings, Hoopoes, Common Swifts and Barn Swallows. Some times I saw flying by Grey Herons. Near water tank in Baigekum the Shikra hunted to Tree Sparrows.

On the road to Kyzylorda there were some Asian Poplar groves, in one of them I stayed. I saw many tree-holes made by Woodpeckers but didn't watch neither Woodpeckers nor other birds. Only one nest of Shikra was noticed.

Over Kyzylorda on road sides there were the little lakes (even may be named as puddles). Near this lakes some times I saw Marsh Harriers, once the pair of Ferruginous Ducks, three times White-tailed Lapwings and also flying Collared Pratincoles. Once the hen of Common Pheasant crossed the road. During from about 20 till 40 kilometers from Kyzylorda I four times saw flying Herons and all four time they were the Purple Herons (the last near Irkol settlement). The observed birds were mostly near water living birds, also I saw Bee-eaters include Blue-cheeked ones.

In the evening near Korkyt-Ata memorial I watched a lot of Masked Wagtails and Barn Swallows. Once the pair of Black-bellied Sandgrouses flew to the Syrsaria side and back.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
