Kim-Asar gorge. Ile Alatau National Park.

2011-05-02| Askar Isabekov

The sunny warm day. Birds were a bit, probably on account of our late arriving (9.50 am). In first I noted the singing White-bellied Dipper. In addition to Dipper also Greenish Warblers, Coal Tits and Tree Pipits were singing a lot. Greenish Warblers were singing among the spruce-trees branches, but Tree Pipits were singing from the top of spruce-trees. Also today I heard very perfect song of Blue Whistling Thrush. The Black-throated Accentors already didn't sing so actively, today I heard them twice only and noted one only pair hid in spruce-tree. Probably Accentors have clutch already. As songs of birds were everywhere hearable, but singing birds (Tree Pipits and Greenish Warblers) are small, not bright and so not well visible birds. On the northern slope of gorge, especially in the spruce-trees shadows there were the snow; on the border of snow and wet ground I saw feeding Red-rumped Rosefinches, Coal Tits and Mistle Thrushes.

My trying to find birds in the juniper thickets was unsuccessful. In the next from juniper spruce-trees I noted Greenish Warbler and one Blackbird. I heard Pheasant and Nutcrackers and saw common Magpies and Carrion Crows. Birds of prey: twice I saw Kestrels and once soaring Booted Eagle. This white morph Booted Eagle was probably the most interesting of today's birds.

1. Greenish Warbler (Phylloscopus trochiloides viridanus)

2. Blue Whistling Thrush (Myophonus caeruleus turcestanicus)

3. Booted Eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus)

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
