Sogety, Big Boguty, Toraigyr, Charyn.

2011-07-14| Askar Isabekov

The cloudy, warm day, with the rain in the end of evening. In Sogety mountains we visited the nest of Egyptian Vulture which was already without the birds. But Egyptian Vulture soared nearby. Also we saw Lesser Kestrels, one large Falcon (probably Saker Falcon), the Little Owl at the hole, Pied and Isabelline Wheatears, Short-toed Larks, Hoopoe, Tawny Pipits, Red-headed Buntings, Turkestan Shrikes, one Cuckoo, and several broods od Chukar Partridges. In other gorge we noticed one adult White-headed Bunting and two juvenile Rock Buntings. It is necessary to note that this year the Rosy Starlings nested in Sogety, we saw a lot of Rosy Starlings in the colony near the road. Nearby to colony some Black Kites were soared.

On the spring in Big Boguty mountains the birds were a little, we noticed only Short-toed and Horned Larks of different ages, both adults and juveniles. One Black-bellied Sandgrouse flew some circles over the watering place but departed frightening the car. In stony desert near the spring we saw Isabelline Wheatears and the same Short-toed Larks. Predators: two Steppe Eagles and one Black Kite.

In gorge of the Torajgyr ridge which opens directly on Charyn river we saw Saker Falcon and Steppe Eagle, and found the nest of Long-legged Buzzard with the one egg dropped out of the nest. We noticed Grey-necked Buntings, Turkestan Shrikes, Hoopoe, and a lot of Chukar Partridges with juvenile birds of different ages: from very little birds with fluff on head to the juveniles already got the adult colouring.

Once we noticed the Tolai Hare. But young female Siberian Ibex showed its curiosity and closed to our car on about 6-7 meters. We long photographed it, but after some time the Goat lost the interest to us and began to crop the grass.

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.
