Little Sorbulak lakes.

2011-11-13| Askar Isabekov

In Karaoi I saw the flying wedge of Gulls, which I could not identify. At entrance to Sorbulak in the morning twilight I saw the Saker Falcon perched on the pole. I thought that have time to take photo of perching Falcon, but unfortunately could not. As a result, only the photo of bird in flight.

At the first lake I immediately saw the group of White-tailed Sea-eagles which flew out when I closed. On the lakes there were Great Cormorants, Steppe Gulls, Black-headed Gulls and Common Gulls, but not so much as a week ago. The number of the Crested Grebes became a less too. The wedge of Pallas's Gulls flew to south. The Ducks which I observed were the several flocks of Mallards, three males of Goosander, and large flock of Common Pochards (from afar). Also from afar I saw two adult Whooper Swans with two juveniles. Near the coast only Coots (about a hundred) and five Black-necked Grebes were floating. Then I watched the hunt of Peregrine Falcon to Pigeons. Peregrine Falcon chased two flocks of pigeons, not giving them possibility to grounded. In the end one of the flock moved to the other side of the lake, but was quickly overtaken by Falcon, which grabbed one Pigeon on the fly. But this time the Peregrine Falcon immediately was attacked by three White-tailed Sea-eagles (two adults and one immature). Peregrine Falcon flew away, but after a while the Sea-eagles flew away too. Total for the day I saw about 8 Sea-eagles. Other raptors I saw: female of Hen Harrier and Long-legged Buzzard. The herons were quite a few, both Great Egret and Grey Heron, each of them I saw at least a dozen. The most numerous of little passerines were Linnets, flying in flocks from three-four to hundreds of birds. Also I saw Greater Short-toed Larks and Reed Buntings. On channel I searched for Little Grebe but didn't find it. But found the White-bellied Dipper which obviously not expecting to see in Sorbulak.

At the back way I noticed the Great Tits and Chaffinches in the roadside thickets. In Karaoi in asian elm grove I observed the mixed flock included the Yellowhammers, one Pine Bunting, Grey-headed Goldfinches, Great Tits and one Chiffchaff. On the pond there were the Black-headed Gulls.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.
