Sorbulak.

2013-04-14| Askar Isabekov

A long long time I was not in Sorbulak. But now there is birds migration in this place. So when Sanzhar suggested to go to Sorbulak I gladly accepted. Weather is windy rainy and overcast in morning, but sunny and windless after noon. Firstly we observed lakes and channels of Little Sorbulak, but didn't see any interesting, only a lot of fishermans all around. In the island of 1st reservoir we saw white spots of Gulls, but Black Kites were the most significant birds here. In my opinion Big Sorbulak is much more interesting in this season, therefore we went there. In the southern coast of Big Sorbulak there is birds activity. In the sandy shore we saw Dalmatian Pelican, Mute Swan, different Ducks and Waders. There are no Pelicans on water but a lot in island. But most numerous of birds is Black Kite again. Near the first dam we met Gennady and Lena Dyakin which drove in opposite direction. I moved to Gennady’s car but other guys went to White-headed Ducks and Curlews earlier noticed by Gennady. So only I didn’t see White-headed Ducks today (( But only I twice had a lunch ))

This time sun become and the new birds arrived to the already observed sandy shore. We saw Ducks, Shorebirds, Terns, Wagtails, and Pratincoles. But of course birds are not so much as I expected. Then we drove by the tree-line to Zhamankum. There are many Rooks in colony in tree-line. Also we saw females Kestrels near the nests (we didn’t see males), and some passage birds such as Tree Pipits, Shrikes and Black-throated Thrushes. To Zhamankum we arrived in at dusk and didn’t see any birds.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.
