Some migrants in Korgalzhyn

2015-08-25| Steve Klasan

Hi everybody,
last days I routinely checked the bushes and trees in the center of Korgalzhyn (Akmola District) and found some interesting passerines. It all started on 22.08. when I did my first walk trough the city and just found two Pied Flycatchers and a quite colorful Phylloscopus-Warbler, after some brief views it turned out to be a Wood Warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix), other birds present where several Spotted Flycatchers and local Greenish Warblers and Lesser Whitethroats.
During the last days I did the same round and found up to four Pied Flycatchers in the city center, other birds found during my walk where: Great Tit, Great spotted Woodpecker and some migrating Tree Pipits. Additionally the Wood Warbler was still present today (25.08.).

The local Hobbys are still around with their fledged chicks, attacking noisily every Kestrel or Pallid Harrier thats passing the village.

See attached some pictures of these guys.

Greetings Steve

It's great to read your entry from Kurgaldzhino. Who is on the second photo? Is it female Pied Flycatcher? Hope you will find interesting shorebirds too.

2015-08-26. Klasan Steve:

Yes, the second bird is a 1st year, or female Pied Flycatcher.

Aktau, Mangystau region

A rare passage species in Kazakhstan. The most recent photographic record in the country was made on 21 April 2022 in the Suzak District of Turkestan Region (Martin Grienenberger; see the website gallery). In Mangystau Region, only two records supported by photographic evidence are known from recent decades of the 21st century: 20–24 May 2009 in the Kenderli area (Neve et al., 2010) and the present observation.

The first photo recording of a Northern Bullfinch in Almaty on the website is a rare sighting for a region where they were previously observed during wintering in the mid-20th century and have now become only occasionally encountered.
